Baja California 1st "first-time" Adventure February 7, 2011

After the prospect for the 1st "first-time" Adventure panned out to be too easy (for an extreme adventure) my friend Karl and I did some intense scouting among the many other candidates. We found the mini Rubicon of Baja California! Even worse - it can not be driven the way it presents itself. It needs work!

There is no apparent reason why this road had been created decades ago - there are no ranchos out there and there is no sign of mining. There are ranchos east and west of it and their portion of the road is reasonably maintained. Its the center section that will make an excellent first "first-time" Extreme Adventure. Where is it exactly? We'll tell you when you get here.

Over a stretch of about 3.5 miles the road seems lost. Deep washouts, devastating landslides plus 40 years worth of bushes and trees growing on the road. We figure it will take 6 men about 4 days to travel the entire stretch from coast to coast. From the Pacific Ocean to the Sea of Cortez. We'll celebrate the completion at a beautiful beach camp. Or we go home with our tails between our legs if we fail.

If you are afraid of your car's paintjob - please do not join! This trip will be pretty rough. It will be hard labor for several days. Cutting trees, shoveling gravel, moving boulders and rocks for hours. We are not even talking about any of the possible rescue actions. But if we prepare well and drive smartly, we should not have any casualties.

We will need to coordinate who is bringing which tools - chain saws, shovels, breaker bars etc. etc.

Please see "what to bring" before signing up.
